The Best Free Guitar Effects and Recording Apps

Whether you're a vintage purist or like to stay on the cutting edge of technology, being a guitarist in the digital age means having access to a wealth of sounds and technology to create your music quicker and easier than before. Instead of having to save up to buy an amp, cab, effects pedals, noise gates to get your perfect tone, you can now get a wealth of tones and sounds from nothing more than your iPhone! There are some great free amp modelling, recording and effects apps available and that’s why we’ve decided to compile a list of some of the best so you can get rockin’ right away! All you’ve got to do is get an adapter, such as the Guitar Gear uGig, Line 6 Mobile In, Peavey AmpKit Link HD Digital Guitar Interface and Griffin’s GuitarConnect Cable or GuitarConnect Pro, plug in your guitar and iOS device and get rockin’!

Apple’s GarageBand offers everything you need to learn, play, record, mix, and share great-sounding music.

Plug in your electric guitar or bass and play through classic amps and stompbox effects. You also get access to virtual instruments which you can arrange and mix like keyboards, strings, drum grooves, loops and much more.

Plus you can share your song using email, Facebook, YouTube, SoundCloud, or AirDrop for iOS as well as store them across all your iOS devices with iCloud.

AmpliTube puts an entire guitar/bass rig at your fingertips with three effects (delay, noise filter & distortion), an amp with full controls plus an adjustable speaker cabinet and emulated microphone placement. There’s also some awesome Fender amps plus effects and amp models drawn from such legendary users as Jimi Hendrix and Slash. For those wanting something simple with some heavier sounds, the AmpKit is for you. This is great for practice as well as trying out different types of amp combos and effects.
